The Inspector General of the US Department of Homeland Security has announced an investigation into the Secret Service over allegations of negligence during a Pennsylvania rally where a assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump took place. The purpose of the investigation is to evaluate the security measures taken by the Secret Service during the Trump campaign event on July 13, 2024. This review will be conducted in addition to the independent security review ordered by President Joe Biden. During the incident, the 20-year-old attacker, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to approach the stage where Trump was speaking from a distance of 135 meters and opened fire. This raised serious questions, especially considering the increased security measures due to threats from Iran. Trump was lightly injured in the attack, while one rally attendee was killed and two others were seriously injured. Secret Service agents quickly intervened and removed Trump from the stage, and sharpshooters neutralized the attacker. Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle stated that they are working to understand how the incident occurred and to prevent similar incidents from happening again. She also announced full support for the investigations. This incident will lead the Secret Service, which has approximately 7,800 personnel and is responsible for the protection of important individuals, including government officials, to review its security protocols.
