A Qatar Airways plane evacuated more than 230 people from Kabul airport in the Afghan capital to the Qatari capital Doha, a senior official said Sunday.

Turkey is taking a leading role in the fight against Islamophobia in international platforms, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday.

"We are fighting against a more deadly and sneaky virus. This virus, which is as dangerous as the coronavirus, is called Islamophobia," Erdogan said at a gathering organized by the Turkish American National Steering Committee in New York City.

"This virus is spreading very quickly in countries that have been portrayed as cradles of democracy and freedom for years," he said.

He noted that Islamophobia has turned into a trend.

Erdogan visited the soon-to-open Turkevi Center on Sunday for a brief survey, shortly after landing in New York.

He is in New York to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Turkey's foreign minister met separately Sunday with his Turkish Cypriot and Indonesian counterparts in New York on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

"Ahead of #UNGA76 meetings, consulted as usual w/my brother FM Tahsin Ertugruloglu of #TRNC," Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Twitter.

Turkey cannot welcome more migrants, and a new migration flow could be "inevitable" if the EU does not deliver on its promises, Turkey's parliament speaker said Sunday.

Mustafa Sentop's remarks came during an interview with Spanish news agency EFE just before he left Turkey for an official three-day visit to Spain.

Other developments

Polls closed Sunday after Russians voted in a three-day parliamentary election.The voting, which was expanded to three days as part of coronavirus measures, ended as of 8 p.m. local time (1700 GMT).

With 14 parties competing for 450 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of the parliament, only the MPs that pass the 5% threshold will win a seat.

In sports news, Turkey sealed a back-to-back European championship title after the national amputee football team defeated Spain 6-0 in Sunday's final.

Turkey clinched the trophy with goals from Omer Guleryuz (3), Kemal Gules (2) and Rahmi Ozcan at Cracovia Stadium in Krakow, Poland.They dominated the tournament by scoring 36 goals and conceding only two.

Turkey became the winner of the first edition in 2017 after beating England 2-1 in the Istanbul final. -
