THE ATTACKER WAS FOUND DEAD
According to a statement from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, many people were found dead in an attack in the municipality of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The police reported that the suspect was also found dead.
AT LEAST 25 PEOPLE INJURED
Canada's national broadcaster CBC, citing the Canadian police, stated that at least 25 people were injured in the attack, including some in critical condition.
"POLICE FOUND MANY DEAD BODIES"
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued a statement regarding the shooting in British Columbia, stating that they received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Middle School.
The statement included the following: "As part of the initial response to the incident, police entered the school to assess the threat. During the search, officers found many dead bodies. A person believed to be the attacker was also found dead from a self-inflicted wound."
SCHOOLS CLOSED AFTER THE ATTACK
Elementary and middle schools in Tumbler Ridge will remain closed for the rest of the week following the shooting that occurred this afternoon. The school district stated online: "Due to the tragic events that occurred today in the Tumbler Ridge community, Tumbler Ridge Middle School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed until the weekend. The district administration will provide support and share information about where and how support will be offered on social media."
"EMERGENCY ALERT HAS BEEN LIFTED"
British Columbia's Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger described the incident as "devastating," adding that her office would "mobilize all resources to investigate and support the people of Tumbler Ridge."
Krieger continued in her statement: "The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has lifted the emergency alert in Tumbler Ridge. The police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to any suspects or the public.
Today's devastating events have deeply shaken the community and the entire province. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community. I want to thank the RCMP and first responders for their swift and courageous response. We will mobilize all our resources to investigate and support the people of Tumbler Ridge."
