24-year-old model Genevieve Brewster suffered permanent vision loss in her left eye in 2021 after being struck by the metal strap of her friend's Dior bag.

In the incident that occurred in May 2021, as her friend threw the bag over her shoulder, the metal strap hit Brewster's left eye. After the initial intervention, the young model began to see "flashes of light" and "floaters" in her vision.

Brewster, who was also featured in Vogue magazine, attributed these symptoms to working in a nightclub and stress. However, when she completely lost her vision in December 2021, she went to the hospital and learned that three-quarters of her retina had detached.

Having undergone nine surgeries in two years, Brewster experienced some improvement in her vision in October 2023, but she became blind in September 2024 due to a complete detachment of her retina.

"It was a traumatic experience, a shock," Brewster said, adding, "It was very difficult to face this situation while trying to start my career and step into adulthood."

The young model shared her experiences on TikTok, receiving over 144,000 views. Brewster, who mentioned that she delayed seeing a doctor due to not having health insurance, urged young people to "listen to your instincts and get yourself checked."

Currently, Brewster states that she can only distinguish colors and shadows, and she expressed that her biggest fear is losing vision in her right eye as well.
