A gunman, described as wearing a bulletproof vest, entered a skyscraper in the Manhattan area of New York City with a long-barreled weapon and shot dead four people, including one police officer. The assailant, identified as a "lone shooter," later committed suicide.
The armed attack that took place in the skyscraper located at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, one of New York's busiest areas, has shocked the city. The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced that six people lost their lives in the attack. Among the deceased were an NYPD officer and four civilians, while it was reported that the attacker also committed suicide at the scene. The motive for the attack is still unclear, and federal and local authorities have launched a multi-faceted investigation.
ONE OF THE DECEASED WAS A POLICE OFFICER
According to a statement from an NYPD spokesperson, one of the six people who died in the incident was a police officer. It was learned that the officer's family has been informed. Three senior law enforcement officials stated that the identity of the deceased officer has not yet been made public, but he was shot and killed while confronting the attacker.
THE ATTACKER COMMITTED SUICIDE WITH HIS OWN WEAPON
Sources reported that the attacker shot himself after the incident. The attacker, identified by the NYPD as a "lone gunman," was revealed to be 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura. Tamura, who is registered as a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, has not yet had his motive for the attack clarified.
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch stated in a post on the social media platform X, "The scene is currently secured, and the lone attacker has been neutralized." Following the incident, all entrances and exits in the area were closed, and detailed search operations were initiated in the skyscraper.
6 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES
Security camera footage showed 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura entering the building's lobby with an M4 assault rifle and firing directly at a uniformed NYPD officer. Commissioner Tisch explained that the attacker shot a woman who was hiding behind a column and opened fire in the lobby.
NYPD officer Didarul Islam was reported to have been shot and seriously injured, later dying at New York Presbyterian Hospital. The 36-year-old Bangladeshi officer was a father of two, and it was noted that he and his wife were expecting their third child. Commissioner Tisch stated that Islam had three and a half years of service in the department and was assigned to the building under special security services.
One of the other three deceased was a security guard shot in the elevator area, another was a man shot in the lobby, and the third was a woman found dead on the 33rd floor.
MENTAL HEALTH NOT IN ORDER
Tisch noted that Shane Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues, stating, "The motivation is still unclear. We are trying to understand why he specifically targeted this building." The 345 Park Avenue building, where the attack took place, houses offices of global firms such as Blackstone, KPMG, NFL, and Rudin Management.
LEFT COLORADO, ATTACKED IN NEW YORK
According to police records, Shane Devon Tamura left Colorado on July 26. He passed through Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and was last seen in Columbia, New Jersey, at 4:24 PM on Monday. Shortly after, he reached Manhattan and carried out the attack.
A CACHE OF WEAPONS FOUND IN HIS VEHICLE
The NYPD found a rifle case, ammunition, a loaded handgun, magazines, a backpack, and medications written in Tamura's name during a search of the attacker's vehicle. No dangerous materials were found during the explosive search.
FEDERAL OFFICIALS HAVE JOINED THE INVESTIGATION
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Pam Bondi announced via X that a command center has been established under the leadership of Acting U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to respond to the attack. Bondi stated that federal prosecutors and local FBI agents are actively involved at the scene.
STRANGE BEHAVIORS DURING THE ATTACK CAPTURED ON CAMERA
Tisch noted that the attacker allowed a woman exiting the elevator to pass by unharmed. "He pulls away from the woman and gets into the elevator himself. This detail gives the impression that the attacker acted selectively, not randomly," she said.
ONE OF THE CITY'S MOST CRITICAL LOCATIONS
The 345 Park Avenue building, where the attack occurred, is only a few blocks away from Grand Central Station and the Museum of Modern Art. The 190-meter-high building occupies a city block and is one of the few New York skyscrapers with its own postal code. The building, which is also close to Rockefeller Center and Central Park, is known as the headquarters of the investment firm Blackstone.
THE REASON FOR THE ATTACK IS UNDER INVESTIGATION
Law enforcement is investigating the attacker's background and potential motivations. At this stage, no official statement has been made regarding whether the attack is linked to terrorism. Authorities are evaluating many different theories regarding Shane Tamura's previous activities.
FBI New York Field Office Deputy Director Christopher Raia stated that teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and that they are working closely with the NYPD. "This is an investigation conducted by the NYPD. However, we are providing all necessary support," he said.
MAYOR: THIS IS A MEANINGLESS NIGHT OF VIOLENCE
New York Mayor Eric Adams emotionally stated at a press conference, "Five innocent people were shot tonight. Four of them lost their lives. This is a meaningless night of violence." Adams remarked about the slain officer Islam, "He was a God-fearing man, devoted to his family. He loved this city."
NYPD Commissioner Tisch announced that the Special Operations Unit conducted a second sweep of the building and that there is currently no threat to the public. "We believe there was only one attacker. There is no active threat remaining for the public," she said.

The police urged citizens to stay away from Park Avenue, 52nd Street, and the surrounding areas in Midtown Manhattan. The security level in the city has been temporarily raised. The investigation conducted jointly by the NYPD and the FBI is expected to reveal new details in the coming hours.
