With the year 2026, the average speed monitoring system implemented across Turkey has initiated a new era in traffic controls. The system, which operates with smart corridors and license plate recognition cameras, calculates the average speed of drivers on specific routes to detect violations. The application, which renders short-term slowdowns at radar points ineffective, notifies drivers of penalties digitally through the e-Government platform.
The Ministry of Interior has implemented a new application for traffic controls across Turkey as of 2026. The average speed control system, which has been launched in 81 provinces, has created a control mechanism based on driving time, leaving the traditional radar understanding behind.
SLOWING DOWN IN FRONT OF THE RADAR WILL NOT BE ENOUGH
With the new system, it is no longer possible for drivers to avoid penalties by simply reducing speed at the radar point. Inspections are now conducted by looking at the entire driving duration along the designated route, rather than a single momentary measurement.
The Smart Corridor System, which forms the basis of the application, works with License Plate Recognition System (PTS) cameras placed at entry and exit points on the road. The transition times of vehicles between these points are recorded. Average speed is calculated by comparing the distance traveled with the time taken.
SPEED VIOLATIONS ARE AUTOMATICALLY DETECTED
If a driver completes the designated distance in a shorter time than the legal speed limit allows, the system considers this a speed violation. This way, compliance with the rules is monitored not just at a specific point on the road, but throughout its entirety. Short-term speed reduction maneuvers cannot hide the violation.
The new technology is not limited to speed control. Thanks to high-resolution cameras and artificial intelligence-supported software, behaviors that violate traffic rules, such as not wearing a seatbelt, lane violations, and using a mobile phone while driving, can also be detected. These violations can be recorded at any hour of the day.
PENALTIES ARE PROCESSED IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT
Detected violations are quickly analyzed by the system and converted into penalties in an electronic environment. The processes are communicated to drivers via e-Government.
THE GOAL IS SAFER TRAFFIC
Authorities emphasize that the main purpose of the average speed control system is to encourage drivers to comply with the rules throughout the entire road. With the widespread implementation of this application, the aim is to reduce traffic accidents and create a safer transportation environment.
