Babri Mosque Case: Those Who Wrote The Judgement

Five member bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, announces long pending judgment in Babri Mosque case.

Indian Supreme Court on Saturday cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the site demolished Babri Mosque at the north Indian city of Ayodhya.

The verdict was delivered by a five-judge constitution bench. The bench also included a Muslim judge.

Here is a brief profile of the five judges:

Ranjan Gogoi, India's Chief Justice

After putting-in nearly four decades of service in the Indian judiciary, Babri Mosque verdict was the last case decided by Ranjan Gogoi, who is set to retire on Nov. 17.

He belongs to the northeastern province of Assam. Earlier, Gogoi served as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Sharad Arvind Bobde

Sharad Arvind Bobde is set to succeed Gogoi to be 47th Chief Justice of India.

Born in the western province of Maharashtra, Bobde was elevated to Supreme Court in 2013. He termed the Babri Mosque case, as "one of the most important cases in the world judicial history."

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud

A Harvard law graduate, D. Y. Chandrachud was elevated to Supreme Court as a judge in 2016.

He is known for his progressive views and has overturned several rulings that were believed to have turned obsolete with the passage of time. His father, Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, was India's longest-serving Chief Justice.

- Ashok Bhushan

Ashok Bhushan was appointed as Judge in Supreme Court in 2016. He started his law practice in 1979.

Earlier, Bhushan served as Chief Justice of High Court in the southern province of Kerala.

Abdul Nazeer

Abdul Nazeer was formally enrolled as a lawyer in 1983 in the southern province of Karnataka, where he practiced law for 20 years.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2017. -
