In order to combat counterfeit currency and prevent its circulation, while the necessary checks and updates for currency counting, counterfeit currency control, and ATM machines are ongoing, some banks have stopped accepting $50 and $100 banknotes that were printed before 2009.
Currency counting, counterfeit currency control, and the necessary checks and updates for ATM machines are ongoing. The different measures implemented by banks to combat counterfeit dollars are also noteworthy.
Some banks have suspended the purchase of $50 and $100 banknotes printed before 2009 until the software updates for currency counting and ATM machines are completed. These banks only accept newly printed $100 bills.
SOME BANKS HAVE COMPLETELY SUSPENDED THE PURCHASE OF $50 BANKNOTES
During this process, it has been learned that some banks do not accept high-value foreign currency in cash, while others do not accept $50 banknotes regardless of the year of printing. Public banks approach the issue with a perspective of protecting consumers and preventing victimization.
THE CENTRAL BANK CONTINUES ITS NECESSARY WORK
Banking sector officials state that there is no possibility of the dollars received by buyers from any bank branch being counterfeit. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) is also continuing its necessary work in coordination with the relevant judicial authorities as part of its effective fight against banknote counterfeiting.
COUNTERFEIT BANKNOTE MONITORING SYSTEM
On the other hand, the Counterfeit Banknote Monitoring System (CBMS), developed by the CBRT on January 1, 2016, aims to closely monitor banknote counterfeiting across Turkey, establishing connections between law enforcement and banknote counterfeiting incidents to enable a more effective fight in this area.
The CBMS can also be used by the units of the General Directorate of Security and the General Command of Gendarmerie in the central and 81 provincial centers, as well as the relevant units of the General Directorate of Customs Protection.
With this system, the CBRT detects and monitors which security features on banknotes are being counterfeited and to what extent. The CBRT's website, which contains information related to the CBMS, also provides details on what to do when encountering a banknote suspected of being counterfeit.
