THE ROAD CONNECTING DAMASCUS TO SUWAYDA HAS FALLEN UNDER THE CONTROL OF SYRIAN SECURITY FORCES
After entering the city center of Suwayda during the day yesterday, the Syrian security forces continued their operations and search-and-arrest activities in the northern, northwestern, and northeastern neighborhoods of the province after leaving in the evening.
The Unkud Junction in the suburbs of Suwayda and the Tishrin Junction in the city center have come under the control of the security forces. The security forces have also taken control of the Kanavat road that connects the capital Damascus to Suwayda.
CEASEFIRE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED
Following the developments, officials from the Media and Communication Department of the Ministry of Defense spoke to the Syrian official news agency SANA, reporting that a ceasefire has been established between the Syrian security forces and armed local groups.
SUWAYDA EVENTS
Clashes had begun in the province of Suwayda on July 13, following mutual kidnapping incidents between Bedouin Arab tribes and Druze armed groups.
The Damascus administration had dispatched security forces affiliated with the Ministries of Defense and Interior to the region to stop the clashes. Violent clashes had also occurred between the security forces that entered Suwayda on the morning of July 15 and local groups.
Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Kasra announced a ceasefire in Suwayda but stated that a response would be given in case of any attack or gunfire from illegal groups.
Hikmet al-Hijri, one of the spiritual leaders of the Druze, initially approved the entry of government forces into the city but later backtracked on this stance and called on the people of Suwayda to resist against government forces.
