Gülhan Yıldırım, who underwent thyroid surgery at a private hospital in Kayseri 1.5 years ago, filed a complaint against the hospital and the doctor, claiming that her vocal cord was cut during the surgery. Yıldırım stated, "I lost my voice after the surgery. I had the operation on April 22, 2024. I haven't been able to speak for 1.5 years. And now, after 1.5 years, I still have no voice."
A woman who underwent a thyroid surgery at a private hospital in Kayseri claimed that her vocal cord was cut.
CLAIM OF "VOCAL CORD CUT DURING THYROID SURGERY" Gülhan Yıldırım, a 45-year-old resident of Kayseri, applied to Özel Dünyam Hospital due to thyroid disease. According to Yıldırım's claim, her vocal cord was cut during the surgery. Gülhan Yıldırım filed a complaint with the Provincial Patient Rights Board.
"I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SPEAK FOR 1.5 YEARS" The victim woman, whose life was turned upside down after the wrong surgery, shared her difficulties, saying, "I went to the doctor because of my thyroid disease. I was examined, and as a result of my examination, they suggested surgery. My thyroid was 4 millimeters in diameter. The doctor said we needed to perform surgery immediately. I trusted the doctor and underwent the surgery. After the surgery, I lost my voice. When I couldn't speak, I asked the doctor. The doctor told me that my voice would return within a week or 15 days and they continuously administered cortisone. Every time I went, they kept saying, 'Your voice will come back in a month, in three months, don't rush.' I had surgery on April 22, 2024. I haven't been able to speak for 1.5 years. Even after a year and a half, I still have no voice. I used cortisone for 6 months. Every time I brought this up, the doctor mocked me, saying, 'I can hear you already, what would it matter if you stayed a little quieter?' He joked, saying things like, 'Let your mother's voice be a little hoarse, what will happen if it's hoarse, you'll feel more comfortable, your head won't hurt.' I still can't speak," she said.
"IT FEELS LIKE THERE'S A HUGE STONE ON MY BACK WHEN I SPEAK" Yıldırım stated, "I can't breathe while speaking, and I have seen every doctor possible. I realized I had vocal cord paralysis at the last doctor I visited. When I told the doctor that I already had vocal cord paralysis, he cursed. He said my voice would come back, and it's been a year and a half, and I still have no voice. I lost my working life, I can't communicate with my children, I lost my social life. Who can we trust? I want the hospital to cover my expenses, and I want a refund for the money I paid because I lost my voice. Instead of supporting me, the doctor keeps stalling me, saying I can complain wherever I want, and nothing will come of it. Will my voice remain like this? I can't communicate with anyone. I can't chat with anyone, I can't go anywhere. God forbid, if something happens to me, who will save me? I can't enter enclosed spaces, I can't be found. I even struggle to stand in the bathroom. I have nasal dryness, balance loss, and currently, my left ear can't hear," she said.
Mahmut Şahin, the President of the Consumers Union, who visited the victim woman at her home, stated, "Just as a mechanic repairing a car has the potential to damage another part, a doctor also has the potential to make a mistake after surgery. Doctors are in a very high segment as a profession, but their behavior can be very low. It seems that mocking a patient after surgery and ridiculing them in front of their children is something that can be specific to doctors. It is also a shame for the hospital not to take responsibility after such a wrong surgery at Dünyam Hospital. Threatening the patient politically is another issue. There are places where you can complain if you have a problem with doctors or hospitals. There is a Patient Rights Board, and after filing a complaint, you can also receive your compensations," he expressed.
