Hasan Fırtına, who killed Aybeniz Top by strangling her while living together with a religious marriage in Mersin, said "I regret it" in his final words at the court. However, he could not escape from the aggravated life sentence without parole for the crime of intentional murder against a woman. Hasan Fırtına (30), who strangled and killed Aybeniz Top (24) in Mersin, expressed remorse during the sentencing hearing; however, the court sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment without parole for the crime of 'intentional murder of a woman.' After the verdict, Top's mother, Leyla Topal, reacted by saying, "Justice has been served."
PARTICIPATED IN A TELEVISION PROGRAM AND SAID "MISSING"
The incident occurred on November 20 of last year in the Akbelen neighborhood of the central Toroslar district. According to allegations, Hasan Fırtına appeared on a television program claiming that Aybeniz Top, the mother of his child with whom he lived in a religious marriage, was missing. However, Aybeniz Top connected to the broadcast, stating that she had escaped from Fırtına, wanted to separate, and was not missing.
After the broadcast, a dispute broke out between Hasan Fırtına and Aybeniz Top, who had gathered in the Akbelen neighborhood. As the argument escalated, Fırtına assaulted Top and strangled her. Upon notification from bystanders, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Medical teams determined that Aybeniz Top had lost her life. While Top's lifeless body was taken to the morgue for autopsy, the fleeing suspect, Hasan Fırtına, was quickly apprehended and arrested.
A SENTENCING HEARING WAS HELD
As part of the investigation conducted by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the indictment prepared against Hasan Fırtına for 'intentional murder of a woman' was accepted by the Mersin 3rd High Criminal Court. In today's sentencing hearing, the detained defendant, the lawyers of both parties, and Aybeniz Top's relatives were present in the courtroom. The public prosecutor requested the heaviest punishment for the defendant in his opinion on the case.
HIS LAST WORDS WERE "I REGRET," BUT HE COULDN'T AVOID LIFE IMPRISONMENT
When asked for his last words, defendant Hasan Fırtına said, "I came from Istanbul to get married. I did it in a moment of anger. I regret it very much."
The court panel sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment without parole for the crime of 'intentional murder of a woman.' No good behavior discount was applied to the defendant.
After the announcement of the verdict, Aybeniz Top's mother, Leyla Topal, turned to the court panel and applauded, saying, "Justice has been served." Top's relatives embraced each other in the courthouse corridor, shedding tears.
