Last Friday, following the murder of Ayşenur Halil and İkbal Uzuner, which deeply shook Turkey, investigations into the phone of the killer Semih Çelik revealed many truths. In the aftermath of the incident, the closure of the Discord application, which saw an increase in both institutional and individual usage, was brought to the agenda, while famous singer Ece Seçkin explained the dangers of the platform.
After killing 19-year-old Ayşenur Halil and İkbal Uzuner in Istanbul, Semih Çelik, who committed suicide, was found to have been in contact with individuals referred to as "incels" in a group he was a member of on Discord, and it was revealed that many social media influencers were also connected to these groups.
The singer Ece Seçkin, who stated that she used to play games but realized that the platform's purpose had reached different points, made striking statements.
INCREASE IN PARTICIPATION DURING THE PANDEMIC
Seçkin noted that the Discord platform became popular among gamers and that its usage increased during the pandemic with activities like watching movies. She emphasized that in groups formed by younger age groups, some participants could easily access personal information and even share phone numbers. She expressed her suspicion that particularly disturbing activities and behaviors have become widespread on the platform, and that the recent murders might also be connected to these groups. She highlighted that the dark sides of the online world continue unnoticed.
