English Premier League To Use Semi-Automated Offside Next Season

Decision made after unanimous agreement by all clubs.

The Premier League (EPL) announced Thursday that the semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) would be used for the first time next season after the unanimous approval of all clubs.

"The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters," the Premier League said in a statement.

The technology is also used in the Champions League and Italian top-division Serie A.

FIFA first used SAOT at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It is said it could cut the length of a video assistant referee (VAR) check for offside by 31 seconds. -
