Celal Şengör called on citizens to leave Istanbul. Şengör's close friend, İlber Ortaylı, stated that he would not leave Istanbul.
The recent earthquake in Istanbul has increased expectations for a major Istanbul earthquake. Experts have not been able to reach a consensus on the expected earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher. While Şener Üşümezsoy stated that the possibility of a major earthquake in Istanbul has been eliminated, Naci Görür expressed that a major earthquake is expected. Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy’s statement "There will be no earthquake" and Prof. Dr. Naci Görür’s "There will be one" were asked to Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı. Ortaylı said, "They couldn't decide, so I will? In history, there has never been an earthquake two weeks apart. I know that. But that doesn't mean it won't happen."
REACTION TO THE EVENTS ON THE EARTHQUAKE DAY
In response to the question of whether people should sleep in their homes, Ortaylı said, "They should sleep, but they should sleep properly at home. They should also learn the methods of escaping from an earthquake. It's shameful; there shouldn't be such chaos during a magnitude 6 earthquake. In Japan, such earthquakes happen every day. People there don’t block traffic by going out into the streets with their cars."
"I WILL NOT LEAVE"
In response to the reminder of Celal Şengör's words to leave Istanbul, Ortaylı said, "Slowly, slowly. If everyone leaves in one day, it won't work. I will not leave Istanbul."
