In Brazil, former President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of "money laundering". The police accused Bolsonaro of smuggling $3 million worth of diamond jewelry into the country and selling two luxury watches, stating that the politician made approximately $70,000 from the sale of these watches, which were gifts from Saudi Arabia. A report on money laundering was prepared against Bolsonaro for not declaring the diamonds that were gifted to him.
A report has been prepared regarding former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is being investigated by the federal police for "not declaring the diamonds he received as a gift from a foreign country" during his presidency.
Two unnamed officials stated that the Brazilian Federal Police prepared a report stating that Bolsonaro "appropriated and did not pay taxes on the diamonds gifted by Saudi Arabia".
BOLSONARO ACCUSED OF MONEY LAUNDERING
Officials who stated that the report accusing Bolsonaro of "money laundering" prepared by the federal police will be sent to the Brazilian Supreme Court, said that it will be up to the Brazilian Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet to decide whether to file a criminal complaint against the former President. The police included 10 people in the investigation, including Bolsonaro's lawyers Frederick Wassef and Fabio Wajngarten.
Wassef, who made statements about the issue, condemned the leakage of the investigation to the press, stating that the investigation should be kept confidential. Wajngarten also stated in a post on social media platform X that he is constantly being punished for defending Bolsonaro, even though it is known that he has no connection to the investigation.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Last year, the federal police accused Bolsonaro of smuggling $3 million worth of diamond jewelry into the country and selling two luxury watches. The police stated that Bolsonaro made approximately $70,000 from the sale of these watches, which were gifted by Saudi Arabia. Brazil requires citizens arriving by plane from abroad to declare goods worth over $1,000 and pay a 50% tax on the value of products above this amount.
