11 YEARS IN PRISON FOR BOB MENENDEZ
A decision has been made regarding former senator Bob Menendez, known for his opposition to Turkey in the U.S. Menendez was sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery, extortion, and corruption charges. He was found guilty of 16 charges related to accepting bribes, including gold bars and cash, in exchange for political favors.
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN BRIBES
After being found guilty, 71-year-old Menendez resigned from the Senate and had run as a Democratic congressional candidate from New Jersey. In July, a federal jury in New York found Menendez guilty of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and acting as an unregistered foreign agent.
Prosecutors alleged that Menendez received bribes from three New Jersey businessmen (Fred Daibes, Wael Hana, and Jose Uribe), which included gold bars, mortgage payments, a luxury car, and over $480,000 in cash. In return, he allegedly protected the individuals from prosecution and used his office to benefit the governments of Egypt and Qatar.
Menendez, who resigned as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in August, was also known for opposing arms sales to NATO ally Turkey due to his open ties with Greek and Armenian lobbies in the U.S.
