A 19-year-old youth in Paraguay came face to face with death due to a dangerous stunt he performed for views on social media. The events that took place during the deadly game called "Chicken," which involves jumping in front of vehicles, were captured on camera.
The incident occurred over the weekend in the city of Minga Guazú, on a dual carriageway. In the footage, the young man is seen suddenly moving towards the front of a rapidly approaching truck while waiting by the roadside. As the 12-wheeled heavy vehicle approaches, he appears to be waving his arms to provoke the driver.
The truck driver experiences a moment of panic when he suddenly notices the young man appearing in front of the vehicle. However, due to the speed, he is unable to brake suddenly or steer the vehicle in another direction. The driver desperately continues on his way, praying that a possible disaster does not occur.
Seconds later, the young man narrowly escapes being crushed under the truck by throwing himself off the road at the last moment. Those moments are recorded by his friends waiting by the roadside with a cellphone.
After the footage quickly spread on social media, the incident caught the attention of the authorities. The police identified the person in the video as Ricardo David Irala Coronel and took him into custody on Monday.
A statement from the Alto Paraná Police Department indicated that it was clearly seen that the suspect jumped in front of a truck traveling on the 18th kilometer of the PY02 highway. The young man, who was found to be filming again in the same area, was captured shortly after the incident and taken to the police station, where he was arrested.
Police officer Deolinda Lezcano stated, "When we saw him, he was filming again. When he noticed the patrol car, he acted as if he was doing nothing."
The detained young man defended himself in a statement to the local press, saying that he made money by filming videos and planned to go to the capital, Asunción, with that money.
"I was misunderstood; I was just filming a video. People exaggerated the situation," he expressed.
The young man also claimed that he knew the truck driver and that the driver was aware of these videos. However, the police are approaching this claim with caution.
Authorities warned that the incident could have led to much more severe consequences. Chief Inspector Elvio Almada stated, "A sudden maneuver by the driver could have caused the vehicle to overturn, resulted in a fatal accident, or led to the young man's death."
Almada emphasized that not only the young man but also his friends who filmed the incident share responsibility, stating, "It is clear that the incident was recorded. The investigation will continue until everyone connected to the incident is identified."
Authorities once again reminded that such dangerous behaviors done for likes and views on social media put both individuals and innocent drivers' lives at risk.
