35-year-old police officer Gislayne Silva de Deus from Boa Vista, Brazil, ensured that justice was served by capturing her father's killer 25 years later. Deus, who was only 9 years old when she lost her father, did not give up on finding the murderer of her father, Giraldo Jose Vicente de Deus, who was killed in February 1999 over a £20 debt.
The incident began when her father was playing billiards in a bar, and his supplier and convicted killer Raimundo Alves Gomes demanded payment for the debt. Gomes, who rejected Deus's offer to pay with a freezer, returned to the bar with a gun after the argument and shot Deus in the head.
Gomes, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2013, escaped during the appeal process. In 2016, when his final appeal was rejected, a warrant was issued for his arrest, but he disappeared.
Determined to find Gomes, Deus started studying law at the age of 18 and later became a police officer. Assigned to the Homicide Bureau, Deus found Gomes hiding on a farm near Boa Vista after extensive efforts and arrested him on September 25.
Confronting the killer, Deus said, "The reason I came here is me. You will serve your sentence now." She added, "I couldn't hold back my tears when I saw the person responsible for my father's death in handcuffs. I thought this day would never come. My father was an honest and hardworking man. He encouraged us to study and helped us with our homework. He was always caring and close."
On September 26, 2024, 60-year-old Gomes's conviction was upheld by the judge, and he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
