DETERGENT COFFEE HAD CAUSED HOSPITALIZATION

On November 17, 2025, in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, young engineer Ayben Ö.T. was hospitalized after feeling unwell following the Turkish coffee she drank in a café. In the investigation initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter, it was determined that the coffee Ayben Ö.T. drank was made with detergent, and suspects, including the business owner and the person who made the coffee, were taken into custody and judicial control measures were applied against them.

Details emerged in the prosecutor's referral letter. In the referral letter, it was noted that no element of intent was found in the actions of the suspects, and the incident occurred when suspect Sıla Nur Ö. asked Münire A. for help due to the café being crowded, and Münire A. entered the café kitchen, which she did not know beforehand, and used the liquid substance in a bottle without any label directly in the coffee preparation.

DECISION OF NON-PROSECUTION WAS MADE

The investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident has been completed, and a decision was made that there was no need for prosecution. In the non-prosecution decision, Ayben Ö.T. was listed as the 'victim', Mustafa Emre T. as the 'complainant', and Engin Ö., Gülsüm Sude Ö., Sıla Nur Ö., and Münire A. as 'suspects'.

THEY SETTLED FOR 1 MILLION 500 THOUSAND LIRA

In the decision given, it was stated that the crime attributed to the suspects falls within the scope of 'settlement', and as a result of the negotiations, suspects Engin Ö., Gülsüm Sude Ö., and Sıla Nur Ö. paid a total of 1 million 500 thousand lira to the complainant, thus indicating that the parties reached a settlement.

It was stated that using the unlabeled detergent in coffee preparation without being aware of it did not constitute a fault.

In the non-prosecution decision, which also included the expert report, it was noted that suspect Münire A. was not previously aware of the nature of the liquid substance that could be mixed with drinking water and did not have a label, and therefore her unintentional use of this substance in coffee preparation did not constitute a fault, and thus it was recorded that Münire A. had no fault in the occurrence of the incident or in Ayben Ö.T.'s injury.

For these reasons, a decision was made that there was no need for prosecution on behalf of the public against the suspects.
