In the election where Tarık Semiz, who served as the acting president and was re-nominated by the AK Party, competed against Sadık Kara, the council members preferred Kara. Sadık Kara became the new mayor of Gülüç, receiving the votes of 8 out of 9 council members in the voting.

Demirtaş, who was re-elected as mayor in the local elections on March 31, denied the allegations during the fifth hearing of the case he was tried without detention at the Ereğli 5th Criminal Court of First Instance in May, claiming that the incident was a political setup. The court sentenced Demirtaş to 3 years, 1 month, and 15 days in prison for 'sexual assault by harassment.' He was also sentenced to 10 months in prison for sexual harassment. After his appeals were unsuccessful, Demirtaş was removed from office by the Council of State following the finalization of his sentence.
