During the İzmir Bayraklı Municipality Council meeting, AKP Council Member Latif Aydemir's words regarding femicides, "Those who kill are as guilty as those who die," had drawn significant backlash. AK Party Deputy Chairman Hamza Dağ announced that Aydemir had been referred to disciplinary action with a request for his expulsion.
In a statement on his social media account, Latif Aydemir argued that his speech was distorted and that there was an intention to harm him.
HE RESIGNED
Aydemir, who claimed that Law No. 6284 on "Protection of Family and Prevention of Violence Against Women," which includes measures against violence against women, has created grievances, stated, "I have fought for the presence and elevation of women in social life with the party, associations, and charitable organizations I am a member of, along with my three daughters. I am deeply saddened that my years-long struggle has been harmed due to my distorted words.
The words I uttered in the council have been served to the press out of context, creating a false perception in society. The main point I wanted to emphasize in my speech was that the phenomena and mentality that lead to death and cause deaths should be examined in order to prevent violence and murder incidents. In my speech, which I made while absolving women, the main issue I wanted to draw attention to was the grievances arising from the misapplication of Law No. 6284. I apologize to the public for my misunderstood sentence and, on this occasion, I respectfully announce to the public that I resign from the Justice and Development Party, where I have served at every level since 2002, in order to prevent harm to my party," he said.
