After a judge overturned his sentence, Simmons, who was released in July 2023 at the age of 71, filed a counter lawsuit claiming that the police had tampered with reports and the prosecution had withheld evidence during the trial, and won $7.15 million in compensation. In a statement, lawyer Elizabeth Wang said, "Mr. Simmons spent a tragic period in prison for a crime he did not commit. Although he can never get that time back, the settlement reached with Edmond will allow him to move forward on his path." Simmons, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1977 following the Supreme Court's decision on the death penalty, became the longest-serving person among all individuals recorded in the National Registry of Exonerations.
