Heavy rainfall in İzmir and Muğla negatively affected life. The driver of a truck trapped in a flooded underpass in İzmir's Torbalı district lost his life, while Zekeriya Şahin, who was swept away by the flood while trying to cross a stream in Muğla's Marmaris district, was found dead trapped under a rainwater drainage pipe.
After the yellow code warnings from the Meteorology for the Aegean Region, heavy rain and storms were effective in İzmir, as well as in Çanakkale, Aydın, and Muğla.
The heavy rain that started in İzmir during the noon hours intensified in the evening. The rainfall caused water accumulation in the city center, as well as in the districts of Çeşme, Torbalı, Menderes, and Seferihisar.
VAN DRIVER DIED IN UNDERPASS The van driven by Mehmet Ekinci (58) in Torbalı became stranded in the rainwater accumulated in the İZBAN underpass in Kazım Karabekir Neighborhood. Upon notification, police, health, and fire teams were dispatched to the area. It was determined that Ekinci, who was rescued from the vehicle by the fire department, had lost his life. Ekinci's lifeless body was taken to the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institution morgue.
After the downpour, the İZBAN Pancar Station and some businesses in Torbalı were also flooded. Tradesman Bilgi Arsu stated that the rainfall frequently negatively affected life in the district, mentioning that there was an infrastructure problem in the area, which caused similar situations to recur.
1 PERSON DIED IN MARMARIS DISTRICT OF MUĞLA After the heavy rain that was also effective in Marmaris, many regions experienced flooding, and floods occurred in the streams.
The water level in the stream in Osmaniye Neighborhood also rose. At that moment, Zekeriya Şahin, who was in the area, wanted to cross the stream to the other side with his vehicle. The person in the vehicle, who was a passenger, got out of the vehicle when Şahin said, 'Let's not cross.' Şahin, who insisted on crossing and drove his vehicle into the stream, was suddenly swept away by the flood.
THE LIFLESS BODY WAS FOUND AFTER 3 HOURS OF WORK After the unfortunate man was swept away with his vehicle and went missing, fire, gendarmerie, AFAD, and health teams were dispatched to the area upon notification. The teams that arrived in a short time found the vehicle that remained in the stream bed as a result of their work. While Şahin could not be reached in the vehicle filled with water, a search and rescue operation was initiated with the participation of NGOs and volunteer citizens to find the driver. After approximately 3 hours of work coordinated by Marmaris District Governor Nurullah Kaya, who quickly went to the area and conducted investigations, Zekeriya Şahin was found under a pipe about 100 meters below his vehicle. Upon inspection, it was determined that the unfortunate man had lost his life, and Şahin's lifeless body was removed from where he was trapped. Zekeriya Şahin, who was learned to work as a cleaning staff in the municipality, left his family and loved ones in mourning with his sudden death, and his lifeless body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institution.
ROADS CLOSED IN BODRUM Due to the heavy rain that was also effective in Bodrum, the road was closed to traffic, and 2 vehicles were caught in the floodwaters.
After the teams' intense efforts, the road that was closed due to floodwaters between Konacık and Bitez was reopened to traffic. Roads were closed to traffic on Şah Street in Bitez Neighborhood due to floodwaters. Citizens trapped in a place were rescued by the municipal police teams. 2 people trapped in a vehicle in Çamlık Neighborhood were also rescued by the teams. Gravel and sand were scattered on the road routes in the neighborhoods of Torba, Yalıkavak, Ortakent, and Gümüşlük. Traffic flow was provided in a controlled manner in the regions. Many houses and workplaces were flooded. While citizens and teams were carrying out water drainage, dogs also had a hard time. A retaining wall collapsed in Bitez Neighborhood. Many gardens were submerged.
ROOFS OF HOUSES FLEW IN KUŞADASI, SEWERS OVERFLOWED After the warning made by the Meteorology 2nd Regional Directorate for Aydın and its districts, thunderstorm and heavy storm were also effective in Kuşadası. Due to the downpour, sewers overflowed on the streets and avenues, and water accumulations formed. Drivers had difficulty progressing on the roads that turned into lakes. Traffic disruptions occurred.
In the strong storm that was sometimes effective throughout the district, many trees and the stands of street vendors were overturned. The roofs of some houses located in the coastal area of Güzelçamlı Neighborhood flew away. Kuşadası Municipality officials continue their work in different parts of the district with construction machinery and field personnel to intervene in the adverse conditions.
