Six months before the traffic accident, the young girl who expressed her wish to donate her organs to her family set off from Rize to give life to others.

On Friday, January 3, 2025, around 11:50 AM, a car hit Ali Faik Yılmaz, who was trying to cross the road on foot, and his 18-year-old daughter Medine Yılmaz in Salarha Town. In the accident, father Ali Faik Yılmaz was slightly injured, while Medine Yılmaz was taken to the hospital by ambulance in serious condition. Medine Yılmaz, who was treated at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University (RTEÜ) Training and Research Hospital, lost her 11-day battle for life and was declared brain dead.

THEY WAVED GOODBYE

The corneas, kidneys, and liver of the young girl, who filled out an organ donation form six months before her brain death, were sent to Sivas and Samsun. Her relatives waved goodbye to Medine's organs, which would give life to others. During those moments, the family could not hold back their tears.

"IT WAS VERY HARD TO MAKE A DECISION"

Her sister Merve Yılmaz expressed that Medine had told them six months ago that she wanted to donate her organs after seeing a news report, and that they felt proud that her organs would give life to another person. "About 11 days ago, my sister was brought to this hospital after the traffic accident. Six months before the accident, my sister had told us that she wanted to donate her organs. She had seen it in a news report on television. It was very hard for us as a family to make this decision. Although it is very difficult for us to know that my sister's organs are somewhere else, it is also a source of pride. I don't know who my sister's organs will go to, but I want them to see me as a sister. I mean, I lost a sister, but I think I gained many siblings," she stated.

"FIVE PATIENTS HAVE A SECOND CHANCE"

Dr. Alihan Madran, a specialist in the Department of Surgical Medical Sciences, Anesthesiology, and Reanimation at RTEÜ Training and Research Hospital, emphasized that Medine's organs would give life to five people. "About 10 days ago, we started the follow-up stages in the intensive care unit due to a traffic accident. We diagnosed brain death. As a result of our discussions with the patient's relatives, they accepted the organ donation, and as a result of our communication with the ministry and our organ donation commission, we performed the organ donation surgery. Our left kidney will be sent to Sivas, and our other organs will be on their way to Samsun. Five of our patients have been given a second chance, a new opportunity. I would like to express my gratitude to the relatives of the patient on behalf of the organ recipients for their decision," he said.
