President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who came to Ankara for official visits, at the Presidential Complex. Following the meeting between the two leaders, an important cooperation agreement in the field of defense was signed between Turkey and the UK.
TURKEY WILL ACQUIRE 44 EUROFIGHTERS
The parties officially announced the agreement regarding the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. Accordingly, Turkey will purchase a total of 44 Eurofighter Typhoons, including 20 from the UK, 12 from Qatar, and 12 from Oman. The agreement is considered a strategic step in terms of incorporating next-generation fighter jets into the inventory of the Turkish Air Force.
STARMER REVEALED THE COST OF THE AGREEMENT: 8 BILLION POUNDS
Meanwhile, after the signatures were affixed, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared a video on social media regarding the matter and revealed the cost of the agreement. In the video he shared, Starmer stated: "Today we are signing a really big deal with Turkey for the supply of Typhoons. 20 Typhoons, a deal worth 8 billion pounds for the UK. But more importantly, the Typhoons bring us together strategically. You can see these Typhoons parked here in Turkey. They came together for this occasion. It's really a beautiful day for the United Kingdom, a really beautiful day for our business."
A MULTINATIONAL PRODUCTION PROJECT OF EUROPE
Eurofighter Typhoon stands out as a joint product of a consortium established by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. However, without the approval of Germany, one of the production partners, it is not possible for the other countries to sell to third countries. In this respect, Eurofighter is considered one of Europe's most complex defense projects both technologically and diplomatically.
TRACES OF THREE AIRCRAFT IN THE DESIGN
During the design process of the Eurofighter, inspiration was drawn from the French Dassault Rafale, Swedish Saab Gripen, and Russian MiG 1.44 aircraft. Thanks to its advanced electronic systems, Eurofighter can detect and track targets in a short time, and it also stands out with its high maneuverability.
CREATING A DIFFERENCE IN THE SKY WITH TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The wingspan of the Eurofighter Typhoon is 10.95 meters, its empty weight is 16,000 kilograms, and its maximum takeoff weight is 23,500 kilograms. The aircraft has a fuel capacity of 5,000 liters and a motor power of 60 kN. The Typhoon can reach a maximum speed of 2,495 km/h at high altitude and provides superior performance in long-range missions with a range of 65,000 feet (approximately 2,900 km). At sea level, it can reach a speed of Mach 1.25 (1,530 km/h). With agility, advanced sensor systems, and electronic warfare capability, the Eurofighter Typhoon ranks among the most effective fighter jets in modern air combat.
WHAT GENERATION OF FIGHTER JET IS THE EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON?
The Eurofighter Typhoon falls into the category of 4.5 generation fighter jets. This class is defined by the advanced avionics systems, high maneuverability, and compatibility with modern combat technologies that the aircraft possesses. Initially developed for air superiority missions, the Typhoon has gradually transformed into a multirole jet capable of successfully performing various missions such as air-to-ground attacks, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. Although it does not have the advanced radar stealth technology of 5th generation fighter jets (such as the F-35), it stands out as one of the most effective models in the 4.5 generation class due to its low radar signature and supercruise capability, which allows it to fly at supersonic speeds without afterburner.
WHICH COUNTRIES USE IT?
In addition to the producing countries, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain, more than 550 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets have been delivered to countries such as Austria, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Turkey will be the 10th country to have these fighter jets in its inventory.
