The New York Times claimed that Israel is responsible for the explosions of beepers in Lebanon and that front companies were established for this purpose. Former and current intelligence officials stated that the beepers containing explosives were targeted at Hezbollah.
The New York Times, one of the leading media organizations in the United States, reported that Israel is responsible for the explosions of beepers in Lebanon and that front companies were established for this purpose. Twelve former and current defense and intelligence officials provided evaluations to the New York Times (NYT) regarding the explosions of beepers in Lebanon.
ISRAEL HAS ESTABLISHED FRONT COMPANIES FOR BEEPERSThree intelligence officials, who requested to remain anonymous, stated that the company BAC Consulting KFT (BAC Consulting Ltd), which is alleged to have sold the beepers exploded in Lebanon, was "established as a front company by Israel." The officials noted that at least two more front companies were established "to conceal the identities of the Israeli intelligence officers producing the beepers," but did not share details about these companies. "THE DEVICES' BATTERIES CONTAIN EXPLOSIVES"Officials stated that BAC initially "produced beepers for ordinary customers," but the main target was Hezbollah, and the beepers produced for Hezbollah contained the explosive substance "PETN" in their batteries. Intelligence officials mentioned that these beepers began to be sent to Hezbollah in small numbers starting from the summer of 2022, and production was accelerated after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's statement of "No phones should be used on the battlefield."
"ARABIC MESSAGES TRIGGERED THE EXPLOSIONS"Intelligence officials also stated that the shipment of beepers to Lebanon increased throughout the summer, reporting that thousands of devices were distributed to Hezbollah members and allies. To prevent suspicion among Hezbollah members, the officials said that "Arabic messages were sent to the beepers that appeared to come from high-ranking Hezbollah leaders," noting that the messages triggered the explosions. Nasrallah, in a statement made on February 13, linked the recent increase in Hezbollah's losses to the phones and the internet used, requesting all residents of villages and towns in southern Lebanon, especially Hezbollah members, not to use mobile phones.
EXPLOSIONS OF BEEPERS AND RADIOS IN LEBANONOn September 17, simultaneous explosions occurred in beepers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon. In the explosions, 12 people, including two children, lost their lives, and approximately 2,800 people were injured, with around 300 of them seriously. Following the detonation of numerous radios on September 18, 25 people died, and more than 450 were injured. While Lebanese officials hold Israel responsible for the incident, no statement has yet been made by Israel regarding the matter. Since October 8, 2023, there have been sporadic clashes between the parties along the Israel-Lebanon border.
