The United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, with 149 votes in favor and 12 against.

A resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed by the United States on June 4, on the grounds that it did not condemn Hamas in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

CEASEFIRE RESOLUTION ADOPTED

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly voted on a new resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the region. The resolution was adopted with 149 votes in favor and 12 against.

WHAT DOES THE RESOLUTION CONTAIN?

The content of the resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages in Gaza, and the opening of Israeli border crossings for urgent humanitarian aid.

The resolution emphasized that Israel has an obligation under international law as an occupying power to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.

The resolution highlighted the UN General Assembly's determination regarding a two-state solution and referenced the binding decision made by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on March 28, urging Israel to open more land border crossings to Gaza.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The UNSC convened on June 4 to discuss the Gaza resolution, which was signed by the Council's ten non-permanent members (E10) and presented by the group coordinator Slovenia.

The resolution presented for a ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed by the United States on the grounds that it did not condemn Hamas.

The resolution proposing urgent intervention for civilians in Gaza, where Israeli attacks continue, was rejected by the permanent member United States, which has veto power, despite receiving 14 votes in favor.

U.S. Representative Dorothy Shea stated regarding the veto decision, "The U.S. has clearly stated that it will not support any measures that do not condemn Hamas."
