In the Artuklu district of Mardin, donkeys used for collecting garbage from narrow and stair-filled streets are being retired.

Due to the narrow and stair-filled streets in the Artuklu district of Mardin, the donkeys used for garbage collection are being retired. The donkeys will be hosted at the animal farm that will be established.

Speaking at the ceremony held for the protocol signed between the Artuklu Municipality and the Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP), Mayor Mehmet Ali Amak stated that 'the municipality is withdrawing the pack donkeys used in garbage collection and is exploring alternative methods instead.'

Amak noted that in the past, around 80 animals were used for garbage collection, but this number has gradually decreased to 20, and he expressed that municipal workers can clean the areas they can access with small vehicles. Officials planning to establish a similar 'Retired Animals Farm' in Mardin, like the one in Bursa, indicated that they could retire the donkeys with the implementation of the project.
