The trial of 32 defendants, including the hotel owner and municipal officials, regarding the fire that broke out on January 21 at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Resort, which claimed the lives of 78 people, is ongoing with 19 of them in custody.

KARTALKAYA TRIAL CONTINUES

In the second hearing of the case held in a specially created hall in the gymnasium of Bolu Social Sciences High School by the Bolu 1st Heavy Penal Court, after the requests of the defendants' and plaintiffs' lawyers were taken, the opinion of the public prosecutor was sought. The public prosecutor requested that the requests be rejected, stating that they would not contribute to the essence of the case.

"THE KNIFE HAS NOW REACHED THE BONE"

During a break in the hearing, Abdurrahman Gençbay, the father of Yiğit Gençbay, one of the victims of the fire and the President of the 9th Chamber of the Council of State, made statements. Emphasizing that all those responsible for the fire should be prosecuted, Gençbay said:

"Inside, all the defense lawyers of the defendants and the lawyers of the plaintiffs have repeatedly mentioned; the objection to the decision not to grant an investigation permit in the 1st Chamber of the Council of State. The knife has now reached the bone. We expect the 1st Chamber of the Council of State to complete its review regarding the decision to grant or not grant this investigation permit and to open the way for justice. If this is done, the trial will no longer be incomplete. It will turn into a complete trial, and the decision to be made will find its place in the conscience."

"THOSE WHO COMMITTED THIS ORGANIZED EVIL MUST ACCOUNT FOR IT IN FRONT OF JUSTICE"

Gençbay argued that the indictment was prepared prematurely due to shortcomings such as the failure to evaluate some evidence and the incomplete investigation permit process for some public officials, stating, "We expect all those who committed this organized evil, and all those who assisted them, to be held accountable in front of justice."

Expressing that he is a grieving father as well as a judge, Gençbay said, "Therefore, I do not want to say anything that would influence the judiciary in this matter. The penalties requested in the indictment may change during the process. There is 'possible intent', there is 'conscious negligence', and there is the crime of 'killing multiple people by negligence'. The court will evaluate all of these."

On the other hand, the prosecution requested the continuation of the detention of the detained defendants and that the non-detained defendants be tried under judicial control. Additionally, a request for arrest was made for Deputy Accounting Manager Mehmet Salun, occupational health and safety experts Kübra Demir and Ece Kayacan, and technical personnel Doğan Aydın from Aygaz A.Ş.
