The use of credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in shopping continues to increase. According to recent data, this increase has been 78% since last year. The total amount spent is staggering.

The total payment amount made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in Turkey in August increased by 78 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Card payments amounted to 1 trillion 420.6 billion TL. Online card payments also increased by 78 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 413.3 billion TL.

According to the data announced by the Interbank Card Center (BKM), the number of credit cards in Turkey reached 125.9 million, the number of debit cards reached 191.7 million, and the number of prepaid cards reached 101.3 million as of August.

Compared to August 2023, there was a 13 percent increase in the number of credit cards, a 5 percent increase in the number of debit cards, and a 22 percent increase in the number of prepaid cards. The total number of cards reached 418.9 million, showing an 11 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

1.42 TRILLION LIRA SPENDING

The total payment amount made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in August increased by 78 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 1 trillion 420.6 billion TL. Credit cards were used for 1 trillion 192.4 billion TL of card payments, while debit cards were used for 200.4 billion TL and prepaid cards were used for 27.8 billion TL.

MAJOR INCREASE IN CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS

The growth rate in credit card payments compared to the same period of the previous year was 83 percent, while it was 48 percent for debit card payments and 104 percent for prepaid card payments. The total number of payments made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in August increased by 12 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 1.61 billion. Credit cards were used for 927.4 million payments, while debit cards were used for 556.1 million payments and prepaid cards were used for 114.5 million payments. The growth rate in the number of payments made with credit cards was 15 percent, while it was 3 percent for debit card payments and 32 percent for prepaid card payments compared to the same period of the previous year.

INCREASE IN THE SHARE OF CARDS IN ONLINE SHOPPING

Online card payments increased by 78 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 413.3 billion TL. The share of online card payments in the total amount reached 28 percent.

The number of online card payments increased by 6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 217.9 million. The share of online card payments in the total amount was 14 percent.
