THEY SET SAIL ON JULY 20
The Hanzala ship departed from the port of Syracuse, Italy, on July 13 but completed its final preparations at the port of Gallipoli from July 15 to July 20 to address some technical needs. It was later reported that the ship, which set sail on July 20, had 21 activists on board.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
As part of the last mission organized by the civil society organization "Freedom Flotilla Coalition" to break the blockade on Gaza and deliver aid to the region, the 18-meter Madleen ship set sail for Gaza from the San Giovanni Li Cuti Port in Catania, Italy, on June 1.
The Israeli army intervened with the Madleen ship, which aimed to break the blockade on Gaza, in the early hours of June 9, detaining 12 volunteers, including Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament (EP), Yasemin Acar, a German citizen and FFC Press Coordinator, Hüseyin Şuayb Ordu from Turkey, Thiago Avila from Brazil, and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The volunteers were brought to Israel, and 4 of them were deported from the country on the morning of June 10.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced on June 16 that all other human rights defenders detained by Israel had been released.
