The teams of the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change determined that 40 trees that should be preserved and relocated according to the "tree survey plan" included in the project approved by the Bodrum Municipality were cut down during their inspections on the land belonging to artist Mehmet Suavi Saygan.
According to the inspection, it was found that 29 trees were not relocated, and 11 trees were destroyed despite needing protection. It was revealed that a similar environmental destruction occurred in the park area located in the northwest of the land; all the trees in the area were cut down, and only one olive tree was left.
WARNING TO THE MUNICIPALITY
The Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change has initiated a detailed investigation regarding the irregularities and destruction that occurred and sent an official warning letter to the Bodrum Municipality for the evaluation of the land within the framework of zoning law. Authorities stated that necessary actions would be taken against those responsible for the violations of the project.
SUAVI'S REACTION
Suavi, who made a statement on social media regarding the events, said, "This is the three-story building that triggered this false campaign, which is 100% illegal, and the first demolition application by the Municipality with a court decision. You popped up everywhere like mushrooms with the zoning amnesty, and then is it okay to set traps for those who do legal work? False journalism is a disgusting and low-level practice. If you have press ethics, personality, and dignity, before making accusations, ask the parties involved, namely me, the contractor. If you are not convinced, then take the necessary actions. But from our side, we have all the evidence and answers."
Suavi also wrote, "Lastly; I bought that land in 2000, it is not new. It has been 24/25 years of ownership. There was no registered, endemic single tree or zoning. Zoning was done around 2016-17, and we had no knowledge of it. Our construction decision is for 2 years. We lived there for 15 years, summer and winter. My daughter was born there. The trees are ours. The heart reminded us. These houses are 50% shared houses built in return for land. There is a contractor. We are only landowners. In other words; there is no exceptional situation. Although our life there may not be continuous at the end of the process, it will continue. I said my daughter's birthplace is there, and its connection to the land will not be severed."
