In earthquake-prone Turkey, various tremors occur every day, and citizens closely follow the warnings of earthquake experts. Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki made important warnings while speaking to the press in Afyonkarahisar.
Moriwaki stated that a 7.5 magnitude earthquake is not expected in Afyonkarahisar, like in Kahramanmaraş and the Marmara Region, but due to the weakness of the ground, even a 6 magnitude earthquake could cause serious damage.
"ALLUVIAL SOIL IS VERY BAD"
The earthquake expert said, "We came to Afyon on December 28 last year. Unfortunately, after that, the East Anatolian fault line began to rupture. Of course, I haven't researched much about Afyonkarahisar since then, but there may be earthquakes in Afyonkarahisar within that year as well. There are fault lines in Afyonkarahisar, and there are 4 fault lines within the city. The alluvial soil is very bad, and because of the fault line, high-rise buildings should not be constructed; the mayor has already decided that permission is granted up to the 3rd floor, which is very good. In some places, for example, a slightly taller building can be constructed for TOKİ's areas."
WARNING OF A 7.5 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE
Moriwaki, noting that more than 50% of buildings in Turkey are illegal, warned of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and said:
"Buildings should be constructed under control by examining the drilling structure and the ground structure; actually, since 1998, it should have been checked whether there was permission, whether the ground was good or bad. Generally, the ground is bad, and I do not expect a very large earthquake here, like the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş or the one in the Marmara Region, such as a 7 or 7.5 magnitude earthquake. But unfortunately, because the ground is bad, even if it reaches 6, there was an earthquake in 2002, so we need to be careful."
"WE MUST ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR EARTHQUAKES"
Moriwaki, stating "They should not ask about the time and magnitude of the earthquake," said, "Earthquakes are coming to Turkey and Japan, so we must be prepared. We must be together in the municipality, at home, in the company, and in schools; then we can reduce this damage by 70%. A 70% reduction is a significant figure, so we need to make broadcasts for this; even if an earthquake is not coming, people may forget, and we need to make news to prevent that."
