Kenya Records 12 New COVID-19 Deaths, 727 Cases

Tally reaches 78,512 infections, including 1,392 fatalities, says Health Ministry.

Kenya on Tuesday announced 12 new COVID-19-related deaths and 727 new infections during the last 24 hours.

The new cases include 705 Kenyans, while 22 are foreigners, the Health Ministry said in a statement on Twitter.

It added that 806 patients (701 from the Home-Based Care Program, 105 discharged from various hospitals) also recovered from the disease.

The latest numbers take the tally to 78,512 cases, including 1,392 deaths and 52,709 recoveries.

With 4,913 new tests conducted over the past day, the cumulative number of tests performed in the East African country stands at 848,016.

Infections started to rise in October, reaching its peak on Nov. 4 with 1,494 cases. The most number of deaths since Aug. 1 -- 26 -- were registered on Nov. 11.

Earlier this month, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the country's nightly curfew until Jan. 3 to contain the spread of COVID-19. -
