North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has rejected offers of assistance from countries and international organizations to address the damage caused by heavy rain and flooding in the country's northwest. MEETING WITH THOSE SHELTERINGAccording to the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim met with the victims who were staying in temporary shelters due to the floods. Kim stated that about 15,000 people could be brought to the capital, Pyongyang, in the coming months and assured that he would support the victims in every area. REFUSED AID OFFERSThanking countries and international organizations for their promises of humanitarian support, Kim expressed that they would repair the damage caused by the floods without external assistance. South Korea, UNICEF, Russia, and China had offered to provide aid materials to North Korea for the flood disaster. HEAVY LOSSESMore than 5,000 people stranded in the Sinuiju city in northwest North Korea were evacuated due to heavy rains causing the Yalu River on the North Korea-China border to overflow. The South Korean Ministry of Unification reported that they estimated the number of people who died or went missing due to the heavy rains and floods in North Korea to exceed 1,000. Kim Jong-un condemned the South Korean media for making fabricated news about the extent of the damage caused by the flood disaster in his country.
