Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, who was arrested as part of the IBB investigation, was taken to the hospital after falling ill in Silivri Prison where he is being held. It has been reported that Polat has undergone angioplasty three times in four years and has had a stent placed.

Polat, who underwent angioplasty three times in the last 4 years and had 6 stents placed, described his health problems in his statement at the police: "I had angioplasty two weeks ago, and I have a total of 6 stents. In addition, two of my arteries are blocked. A new angioplasty was planned for two weeks later. My treatment is ongoing, and I am taking medication. Additionally, due to having had thyroid cancer, regular PET scans are being conducted to monitor and treat whether cancer has developed in other parts of my body. Furthermore, I have sleep apnea, which requires me to live with a device. I also have hypertension and diabetes."

WHAT HAPPENED?

A probe was initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against 7 suspects, including IMM President Ekrem İmamoğlu, Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, and Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan, on charges of "aiding the PKK/KCK terrorist organization." The court ordered the arrest of Resul Emrah Şahan, Mahir Polat, and the Director of the Reform Institute, Mehmet Ali Çalışkan.

WHO IS MAHIR POLAT?

He was born in 1976 in Erzincan. He graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Archaeology and Art History in 2002. He started his education in the Master's program in Architectural History at Istanbul Technical University in 2003. He completed his postgraduate education in 2008 with his thesis on the curatorial activities of museums at the Department of Museum Studies, Institute of Social Sciences, Yeditepe University. He served as a guest lecturer on cultural heritage legislation in the same department between 2011 and 2015. He is currently continuing his doctoral thesis focused on religious cultural heritage, which he started at the Institute of Social Sciences at Istanbul University in 2009. He continued his duties at the General Directorate of Foundations, which he started in 2005, as a Foundation Expert from 2009 onwards. He served as the director of the Akaretler Atatürk Museum between 2014 and 2016 and the Turkish Construction and Art Works Museum between 2016 and 2019. During this period, he was involved in many museum setups and restoration projects. Mahir Polat has works in the fields of historical cultural heritage protection, museology, religious cultural social history, collective memory, and architectural history. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the History Foundation, Europa Nostra Turkey, and the Association of Foundation Experts.
