Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü sentenced to 5 months in prison

A verdict has been reached in the case regarding the protest held in Muğla against the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu as part of the investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. While 10 defendants, including Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü, were each sentenced to 5 months in prison for violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstration Marches, the court decided to suspend the announcement of the verdict.

A verdict has been reached in the case concerning the protest held in Muğla to denounce the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu as part of the corruption investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Among the 10 defendants, including Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü, each was sentenced to 5 months in prison.

BACKGROUND OF THE INCIDENT 

On March 19 last year, party members gathered in front of the CHP Muğla Provincial Directorate and marched to the Muğla Courthouse after a press statement. Police intervention occurred during the protest.

ALLEGATION OF "ASSAULT ON POLICE" 

During the protest, Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü, affected by tear gas, was alleged to have punched a police shield and shown reaction. An investigation was launched by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following the incidents.

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST 10 DEFENDANTS 

As part of the investigation, a lawsuit was filed against Acar Ünlü and 10 others on charges of violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstration Marches.

COURT ISSUES 5-MONTH PRISON SENTENCES 

During the verdict hearing at the Muğla 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance, the defendants were each sentenced to 5 months in prison. The court decided to defer the announcement of the verdict.
