It has been announced that President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who was overthrown in a military coup in Guinea-Bissau, has been brought to Senegal.
In a statement from the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was reported that Embalo arrived in the country "safe and sound" on a plane provided by Senegal. The statement noted that the Senegalese government reiterated its determination to support the rapid restoration of constitutional order and democratic legitimacy.
A GROUP OF SOLDIERS TOOK OVER THE GOVERNMENT
In Guinea-Bissau, with a population of approximately 2.1 million, a group of soldiers calling themselves the "High Military Command for the Restoration of Order" announced on state television on November 26 that they had taken over the government. The group cited the attempt by some politicians and a well-known drug lord to destabilize the country as the reason for their decision. One day after the coup, General Horta N'Tam was sworn in as the "transitional president."
ELECTIONS WERE HELD ON NOVEMBER 23
In the parliamentary and presidential elections held in Guinea-Bissau on November 23, Embalo claimed that he received 65% of the votes according to a count conducted by his team, even before the official results were announced. Embalo's strongest rival, independent candidate Fernando Dias da Costa, also claimed to be the winner of the election.
Immediately after the statements from both candidates, the military announced that they had taken over the government.
