Murat Övüç, who was arrested after being detained as part of an investigation on charges of inciting hatred and hostility, used striking expressions in a letter he sent to journalist İsmail Saymaz. Övüç stated that he still cannot believe what is happening and does not know why he was arrested, expressing that his only wish is for Özgür Özel to visit him.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Küçükçekmece has launched an investigation against Övüç due to a video he shared on his social media account while wearing a headscarf.
Övüç, who was detained by police teams, was brought to the courthouse after completing his procedures at the police station. The duty magistrate decided to arrest Övüç on the charge of "inciting hatred and hostility in the public."
After his arrest, Murat Övüç sent a letter to journalist İsmail Saymaz through his lawyer Çağdaş Çelik.
In his letter, Övüç expressed that he is still in great shock and does not understand why he was arrested, stating that his only request is for Özgür Özel to visit him.
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT MY CRIME IS"
Saymaz, who shared Övüç's letter in his column, wrote that the social media phenomenon used the following expressions in his letter:
"I am still in shock. I don't know what my crime is. My only request here is for Özgür Özel to come and visit me. They came to my house at 03:20 on Saturday night. I spent the night at Vatan Avenue (Istanbul Police Headquarters). On Sunday at 11, they took me to the Küçükçekmece Courthouse. While we thought we would be released with judicial control, the judge's statement of 'Let him be arrested' shocked me. Everyone is treating me very well in Metris. The conditions are quite good. My birthday is on New Year's, I hope to spend it at home. I honestly don't know why I am inside. It was a 20-second video. It was filmed while returning from Germany to Turkey. It was very cold in Germany. I pulled my shawl over my head to protect myself from the cold. I guess that's why I'm here. I want to get out as soon as possible. My psychology is not very good."
Övüç was previously detained in January 2025 on the same charge and was released under judicial control.
