U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff will be applied to certain advanced chips due to national security concerns. Measures will be taken to encourage domestic production in the import of semiconductors. Trump stated regarding the decision, "China wants them, others want them too, and we will make a 25% profit from the sale of these chips."

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose a 25% tariff on certain advanced chips.

In a statement from the White House, it was noted that the executive order signed by Trump addresses national security concerns regarding the import of semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and their derivative products. The statement indicated that a 25% tariff would be applied to certain advanced chips such as the Nvidia H200 and AMD MI325X, but this would not apply to imported chips to support the establishment of the U.S. technology supply chain and to strengthen domestic production capacity of semiconductor derivatives.

TARIFF COMPENSATION PROGRAM ON THE AGENDA

The statement also mentioned that Trump may implement broader tariffs on the import of semiconductors and their derivative products in the near future and could run a tariff compensation program to encourage domestic production, as previously announced.

"CHINA WANTS THEM, WE WILL MAKE A 25% PROFIT"

Trump made evaluations regarding the issue at the White House. Stating that semiconductor companies could sell chips that are not at the highest level, Trump said, "China wants them, others want them too, and we will make a 25% profit from the sale of these chips."

"THIS IS A VERY GOOD DEAL"

Trump noted that they would allow companies to sell chips but that the U.S. would take a 25% share based on the dollar value of the sale. Describing this as a very good deal, Trump stated that both companies and the U.S. would earn billions of dollars. Trump emphasized that the chips allowed for sale are not the most advanced chips like Blackwell or Rubin.

WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. President Trump announced in a post on his social media account last December that he would allow Nvidia to ship its "H200" chips to approved customers in China and other countries under conditions that would ensure national security is strongly maintained.

Stating that they would take a 25% share from this, Trump expressed that the same approach could be applied to AMD, Intel, and other major American companies. Additionally, Trump also signed an executive order to regulate the import of processed critical minerals and their derivative products for national security reasons.
