The European Commission has prepared a notable plan aimed at increasing access to affordable, sustainable, and quality housing. According to the plan, short-term rentals in areas facing housing shortages will be restricted, and the supply of housing will be increased more rapidly. Additionally, the process for obtaining building permits for housing will be streamlined.
The European Commission (EC) has published a statement regarding the first European Affordable Housing Plan aimed at increasing access to affordable, sustainable, and quality housing.
HOUSING PRICES AND RENTS HAVE INCREASED RAPIDLY
The statement indicated that in the last 10 years, housing prices in EU countries have increased by an average of over 60%, and rents have risen by over 20%, making it difficult for millions of Europeans to find housing. It was noted that the housing crisis has turned into a situation that negatively affects labor mobility, access to education, and family formation.
The statement emphasized that the housing issue in Europe harms the competitiveness of the EU economy and the social cohesion of Europe, highlighting the importance of joint efforts to overcome the crisis.
LIMITATIONS ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS ARE COMING
According to the plan, housing supply will be increased more rapidly, and short-term rentals in areas facing housing shortages will be restricted. Additionally, the process for obtaining housing construction permits will be simplified.
The statement pointed out that the EC will support member states, regions, and cities regarding housing, stating, "This plan focuses on increasing housing supply, triggering investments and reforms, addressing short-term rentals in areas facing housing shortages, and supporting those most affected."
The statement noted that the plan would address the mismatch between housing supply and demand through the European housing construction strategy and contribute to establishing a more productive and innovative construction and renovation sector.
SUPPORT FOR SOCIAL HOUSING WILL BE EASED
The statement indicated that changes to EU public aid rules would facilitate member states' support for affordable and social housing, and that rules and procedures restricting housing supply would be simplified.
The statement recalled that the EC has mobilized significant investments of 43 billion Euros in the housing sector to date, expressing that similar investments will continue.
