The death of a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Emergency Hospital, affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), led to the arrest of 5 nurses after 6 babies were intubated. The nurses were released on bail by the court they were brought before.
In the Lefkoşa District Court, M.A, A.D, Ç.Ş, G.K.A, and K.Y, who are accused of feeding the babies by mixing alcohol into their formula, appeared before the judge on charges of "causing death by negligence and neglect."
The court ruled that all defendants would be tried without detention under the conditions of a travel ban, signing in at the police station three times a week, depositing 200,000 TL in cash as bail per person, and signing a bail bond of one million Turkish Lira each by three guarantors who are TRNC citizens. THEY ARE WAITING FOR A REPORT FROM TURKEYIt was reported that new developments could occur depending on the outcome of the expected report from Turkey, and that the course of the trial would change if permanent damage was found in the 6 babies receiving treatment in the hospital.
On the other hand, the TRNC Ministry of Health announced that 3 of the 6 babies, who were intubated due to the presence of medical alcohol in their formula and later continued with normal treatments, had been discharged and handed over to their families.
The ministry's statement noted that the health conditions of the other 3 babies, whose treatments are ongoing, are also stable.
