The Peruvian government announced that it has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico, which granted former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez the right to political asylum at the embassy residence.

"WE HAVE DECIDED TO CUT DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH MEXICO"

Peru's Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela addressed the issue of granting political asylum to Chavez at the Mexican embassy residence in Lima during a press conference. Zela stated, "In response to this unfriendly act and considering the repeated interventions of the current and former presidents of that country in Peru's internal affairs, the Peruvian government has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Mexico as of today."

Targeting the Mexican government, Zela said, "Today, we learned with great astonishment and deep sadness that former Prime Minister Chavez is seen as a possible accomplice in the coup attempt made by former President Pedro Castillo and is currently seeking political asylum at Mexico's embassy residence in Peru."

MEXICAN PRESIDENT DECLARED "UNWANTED PERSON"

The Peruvian Congress had declared former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador "an unwanted person" in the country on May 23, 2023, citing his interference in the country's internal affairs.

Mexico's granting of political asylum to the family of former President Castillo of Peru had also previously caused tensions in the relations between the two countries.
