President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Ayse Ates, the wife of former Idealist Hearths (Ulku Ocaklari) Chairman Sinan Ates, who was killed in Ankara.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On December 30, 2022, former Idealist Hearths Chairman and academician Sinan Ates was attacked by armed assailant Eray Ozyagci, who was hiding behind a car, along with his relative Selman Bozkurt on 1456th Street in Kizilirmak Neighborhood of Cankaya. One bullet fired by Ozyagci hit Bozkurt, while five bullets hit Ates. Sinan Ates lost his life in the attack.

In the indictment of Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Ayse Ates, the wife of Ates, and Selman Bozkurt, who was with her at the time of the incident, were included as "complainant," and 22 people were included as "defendant." In the indictment, it was requested that the defendants Ozyagci, Balkaya, and Kurt be punished with aggravated life imprisonment for "deliberate killing with premeditation," and that Selman Bozkurt be punished with 13 to 20 years for "attempted deliberate killing with premeditation." It was also requested that Cep and Demirbas be punished with aggravated life imprisonment for instigating the murder. In addition, Ozyagci was requested to be sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison for "unlicensed possession and carrying of a firearm," and Demirbas was requested to be sentenced to 3 to 7 years in prison for "illegally obtaining personal data in a chain-like manner."

The defendants Asarkaya, Sarac, Kokturk, Yuce, Uzunlar, Gelenbey, Colak, Bayraktar, Guney, Ersoy, Zorlu, Atac, Yuksel, Oktem, Karadeniz, Atay, and Aykal were requested to be sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison for "aiding deliberate killing with premeditation," while Aykal was requested to be punished with 3 to 6 years in prison for unlawfully obtaining personal information belonging to the victim by abusing the authority granted by his public duty. The investigation against the other 17 out of a total of 39 people who were subject to proceedings and had a travel ban imposed on them is ongoing through a separate file.
