Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the United States' actions regarding Greenland have historical roots, saying, "It is very wrong to believe that this is just an exaggerated statement from the new U.S. administration. The U.S. has serious plans for Greenland."
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at the International Arctic Forum held in the city of Murmansk.
AN OPEN INVITATION TO WESTERN COUNTRIES
Pointing out that the shipping volume through the Northern Sea Route has increased nearly ninefold in the last 10 years, Putin stated that it is planned to achieve shipments of 70 to 100 million tons annually by 2030 via this route. Putin expressed that they want to develop joint projects with friendly countries in the Arctic region and that their doors are open to Western countries.
"RUSSIA IS READY TO DEFEND ITS SOVEREIGNTY IN THE ARCTIC REGION"
Noting that the confrontational attitude of Western countries towards Russia has harmed cooperation opportunities in the Arctic, Putin said, "Russia does not threaten anyone in the Arctic, but it is also ready to defend its sovereignty here."
"THE U.S. HAS SERIOUS PLANS FOR GREENLAND"
Evaluating the recent steps taken by the U.S. regarding Greenland, Putin stated, "These plans have deep historical roots. It is clear that the U.S. will continue to systematically prioritize its geostrategic, military, political, and economic interests in the Arctic region." He also pointed out that the developments are between the U.S. and Greenland and do not concern Russia, stating, "It is very wrong to believe that this is an exaggerated statement from the new U.S. administration. The U.S. has serious plans for Greenland."
