The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), as a result of inspections carried out within the scope of the 2025 Family Year, decided to impose the maximum fine and remove from the catalog for some content broadcast on 5 digital platforms due to being found "contrary to national and spiritual values."
PENALTY FOR 5 DIGITAL PLATFORMS
According to a statement from RTÜK, during the last Supreme Council Meeting, some content broadcast on digital platforms was evaluated with the aim of protecting children from harmful content and combating productions that threaten the Turkish family structure and the common values of society.
In this context, the maximum fine and removal from the catalog were applied to 5 digital platforms for violating broadcasting regulations due to certain productions.
According to the decision, a 3% administrative fine and removal from the catalog were imposed on the Disney+ platform for the film "All of Us Strangers," on the grounds that "homosexuality is positively portrayed through long scenes, and there are scenes that disregard family values and conflict with the common values of society."
Similarly, a 3% fine and removal from the catalog were imposed on the Prime Video platform for the series "Those About To Die," which was evaluated as "a violation of the principle of protecting general morality and family due to the presentation of bloody executions, violence, and homosexual relationships with sexually explicit scenes."
A 3% administrative fine and removal from the catalog were also imposed on the platforms for the film "Kobalt Mavisi" broadcast on Netflix, which included scenes that "encourage homosexuality and violate the national and spiritual values of society, general morality, and the principle of protecting the family," and for the film "Looking: The Movie" broadcast on HBO Max, which was deemed to "violate obscenity and the principles of protecting general morality and the family due to the extensive use of homosexual relationships and nudity."
The production titled "Benedetta" broadcast on MUBI was also found to contain "obscene content that reaches the level of pornography and disregards the feeling of shame," and a 3% administrative fine and removal from the catalog were applied to the platform for "violating obscenity and the principles of protecting general morality and the family."
"A SERIOUS CONTRADICTION AND DOUBLE STANDARD"
RTÜK Member Tuncay Keser expressed his reaction by making a statement from his X account: "RTÜK's 'Family Year' penalties for digital platforms. - The films 'Kobalt Mavisi' broadcast on Netflix, 'Those About to Die' on Prime Video, 'Benedetta' on MUBI, 'All Of Us Strangers' on Disney XD, and 'Looking: The Movie' on HBO MAX were penalized with a 3% administrative fine and removal from the catalog for violating the provisions of Article 8, paragraph 1 of Law No. 6112, which states, 'f: It cannot be contrary to the national and spiritual values of society, general morality, and the principle of protecting the family' and 'n: It cannot be obscene.'
While the family institution is almost dynamited every day for the sake of ratings in daytime programs, RTÜK's claim of 'protecting society' through fictional productions marked with smart labels on encrypted and optional platforms accessed by adults for a fee is a serious contradiction and double standard. It is clear that sensational content directly affecting social values and the family institution can have a much more decisive and concrete impact compared to encrypted film content.
