Russia and Syria have taken a notable step by establishing a military base in the region of Ayn al-Arab, which the PKK refers to as "Kobani". The construction of a large military base by Russia near the Turkey border in the region is seen as a positive development.

DECLARATION OF COMPLETION OF INSTALLATION

The announcement regarding the establishment of the base came from Colonel Oleg Ignasyuk, Deputy Director of the Russian Reconciliation Center. Ignasyuk stated, "The Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic armed forces have completed the installation of the Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) base in the area near the Syria-Turkey border."

The Russian TASS agency evaluated the purpose of the military base as "monitoring the system to cease combat operations between the conflicting parties."

While low-level inter-delegation talks continue between Ankara and Damascus within the framework of the "Astana Spirit", the construction of a large military base by Russia near the Turkey border is seen as a positive development ahead of the expected meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Dr. Eray Güçlüer, President of the Eurasian Strategic Research Center, stated in an interview with Türkiye newspaper that the Syrian regime is becoming more powerful in the region and emphasized Turkey's desire to establish a base in that area.

Güçlüer said, "The establishment of a base in Ayn al-Arab, which includes Syria, is a very positive development. It is a very strategic step. The relationship between Turkey and Russia is in a very good position. The establishment of this base means that the position of the PKK, which is under the control of the US forces in the region, is weakening. The establishment of this base shows that Russia and Syria are becoming influential in the region after the withdrawal of the US and the terrorist organization. The terrorist organization has withdrawn to the Haseke and Deir ez-Zor areas. Of course, it is necessary to pay close attention to this region, but it is also a pleasing development for the Syrian government to become active again in the areas from which it has withdrawn. An important step for Turkey's security."

Güçlüer emphasized that the establishment of a base in the region should be evaluated in relation to the developments in the normalization process. He stated, "The region needs to be completely cleared of the terrorist organization. We can only relax if the terrorist organization is eradicated. The establishment of a base by Russia with the regime in the region and the joint patrols to be conducted by Moscow and Ankara are positive developments, but of course, they are not enough. It is necessary to make strategic maneuvers towards the southeast of Turkey and Syria and encircle and destroy the terrorist organization in order to eliminate it in the Haseke and Deir ez-Zor regions."
