Experts frequently issue warnings regarding the expected major earthquake in the Marmara region. Most recently, Geology Expert Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör made statements in Tekirdağ, one of the provinces in the earthquake zone, indicating that the anticipated major earthquake in the Marmara region could have a magnitude of 7.6, emphasizing that it could trigger a tsunami of up to 7 meters.
Geology expert Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör made alarming warnings at a conference he attended regarding the major Marmara earthquake that will also affect Istanbul.
The conference titled 'The Effects of the Expected Istanbul Earthquake on Marmaraereğlisi' was held in collaboration with the Marmaraereğlisi District Municipality of Tekirdağ and the Istanbul Life Association at the Conference Hall of Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Vocational School. Geologist Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, who participated as a speaker in the conference attended by CHP Tekirdağ Member of Parliament Nurten Yontar, Marmaraereğlisi Mayor Mustafa Onur Bozkurter, and citizens, provided information about the earthquake.
Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör "A TSUNAMI NEARLY 7 METERS COULD OCCUR" After showing visuals accompanied by slides, Prof. Dr. Şengör stated that it is necessary to be realistic about earthquakes. Şengör said, "The North Anatolian Fault Line extends from Istanbul to Marmaraereğlisi, and the movement of this fault directly affects the earthquake risk in the region. A 7.6 earthquake is expected in Marmaraereğlisi. Therefore, Marmaraereğlisi is at the mouth of the cannon. It depends on whether there will be a landslide or not. If there is a landslide, which is possible, it could create a tsunami in the central basin. In Eastern Marmara, it has been calculated that there could be a tsunami wave close to 7 meters as a result of a potential landslide, based on a request from the Turkish Air Force. The wave height reaches 7 meters at the location of the Air Force Academy in Yeşilköy," he said.
"THE DISASTER IN ISTANBUL WILL BE TERRIBLE" Stating that he is painting a dark picture, Şengör said, "But we must be realistic. We cannot deceive ourselves by saying everything is rosy and live in denial. I cannot imagine the disaster that will occur in Istanbul. It will be terrible, and rest assured that no precautions have been taken for this," he said.
After the conference, a gift was presented to Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör by Marmaraereğlisi Mayor Mustafa Onur Bozkurter.
