Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Honorary President of the Contemporary Lawyers Association, who was released from the Marmara Penal Institution after 8 years of detention, was taken into custody again following an appeal against the release decision.
Selçuk Kozağaçlı, who has been imprisoned since 2017 for the crime of 'Membership in the DHKP/C Terrorist Organization' at the Marmara Penal Institution in Silivri, was released last night.
HE WAS DETAINED AGAIN TODAY
Kozağaçlı's release was announced on the social media account of the ÇHD with the note, "Our honorary president, Attorney Selçuk Kozağaçlı has been released." Following the appeal made after the release decision, he was detained again today under a warrant issued against him.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation completed the review of the appeal in April 2024 and upheld the sentences. The chamber noted that the decisions regarding the defendants Avni Güçlü Sevimli, Alper Tunga Saral, Gülvin Aydın Savran, Efkan Bolaç, Güray Dağ, Mümin Özgür Gider, Metin Narin, Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, Oya Aslan, Rahim Yılmaz, Selda (Kaya) Yılmaz, Özgür Yılmaz, Serhan Arıkanoğlu, Taylan Tanay, and Sevgi (Özer) Sönmez were subject to the appeal process, while the decisions regarding Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Barkın Timtik were noted to be subject to appeal for all crimes except for "membership in an armed terrorist organization." The file was returned to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Cassation without examination. Selçuk Kozağaçlı's 12-year prison sentence for "membership in a terrorist organization" was reduced to 10 years and 5 months by the 3rd Criminal Chamber.
