An investigation is ongoing into the robbery that took place at the world-famous Louvre Museum in France on Sunday, October 19.

It was reported that the two suspects detained in the jewelry heist at the world-renowned Louvre Museum in Paris on October 19 confessed to being 'partially' involved in the robbery.

Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that the jewelry has not yet been recovered, saying, "These jewels can no longer be sold. Those who buy them will be guilty of concealing stolen property. There is still time to return them."

NUMBER OF DETENTIONS RISES TO 7

The Paris prosecutor's office announced today that 5 new suspects have been detained. Thus, the number of suspects in custody has risen to 7. The statement said, "Five suspects were arrested simultaneously at different locations in the Paris region around 21:00 on Wednesday, October 29."

LOUVRE ROBBERY

A robbery occurred on October 19 at the world-famous Louvre Museum, which hosts thousands of visitors daily and displays approximately 35,000 works of art. In the morning hours, four unidentified thieves used a freight elevator of a truck outside the museum to break into the area known as the Apollo Gallery, where the Royal jewels are displayed, by breaking a window. The thieves stole 9 pieces of jewelry and dropped the crown belonging to Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, while escaping. The crown was found damaged outside the museum. The robbery lasted 7 minutes, and the thieves fled the scene on motorcycles.

After the robbery, the museum was temporarily closed for security reasons and began accepting visitors again three days later after inspections were completed.

MUSEUM DIRECTOR RESIGNED

In a statement following the robbery, Museum Director Laurence des Cars said, "On Sunday, the thing that museum professionals fear the most happened. The works we protect were stolen. This is a great wound for us."

Des Cars, who took office in May 2021 as the first female president in the history of the Louvre, described the occurrence of the theft despite security protocols as "not inevitable, but a preventable failure," stating, "Museums are never a fortress. They are inherently open spaces. However, this does not mean we should ignore vulnerabilities," and called for the establishment of a permanent police station within the museum. Museum Director Des Cars stated that she submitted her resignation to both the Ministry of Culture and the Presidency after the incident, but her resignation was rejected.
